Florida Band #9
Copeland
This Indie Rock band from Lakeland, was formed in 2000 by singer Aaron Marsh and bassist James Likeness. In 2002 Copeland signed a record deal with The Millitia Group and released their debut album Beneath Medicine Tree. This album is said to contain a heavy medical theme; Aaron being inspired by the hospitalization of his girlfriend and the death of his grandmother.
Their second full length In Motion was released in March of ‘05. They played the Cornorstone Festival in ‘04, ‘05 and ‘06 followed by the released of their thrid album Eat, Sleep, Repeat after signing to Columbia Records.
“With Beneath Medicine Tree, I wanted to make a record that moves people, while with In Motion, I wanted to make a record that makes people move,” Marsh has said.
In Septmeber 2007 James Likeness left to band to pursue a career in graphic design. Then later that year, the band announced they had split with Columbia Records. Their album, Dressed Up & In Line, was released as a B-sides with remixes, demo’s and a few new songs.
Now a trio after the departure James Likeness, Copeland signed to Tooth & Nail Records (their current record label) and their 4th studio album You Are My Sunshine, was released on October 14th, 2008. “Copeland’s emotional candor shifts into a fresh, texture-driven focus, for their most confident material to date.”
You Are My Sunshine is said to be Copeland’s best album so far, “what we did was capture the juxtapostion of we were going for— the blending of human and inhuman sounds, unnatural and ethereal sounds.”
Having 5 albums, the success of You Are My Sunshine, and their steady standing in the Indie rock community, I can be pretty sure that Copeland aren’t going anywhere anytime soon…
