Kenny Vasoli
Born Kenneth Vasoli in Churchville, Pennsylvania, Kenny began playing in bands at the age of 14 and was in a few short lived ones before he was contacted by Matt Watts about “jamming”. A few weeks later Kenny, on lead vocals and bass, Matt, guitarist Mike and drummer Tom started rehearsing together and soon after, touring under the name Sunday Drive.
Sunday Drive was approached We The People Records and asked to produce a recording session initially supposed to be the bands full length released in December 2000. The 12 song record only turned out to be demo’s set for future release as they signed to Drive-Thru Records in April ‘01. Drive-Thru is where they relased their debut EP With Hopes Of Starting Over. After finding out the name Sunday Drive was already taken by a Christian rock band, they changed their name to The Starting Line.
Their debut full length Say It Like You Mean It released in July of ‘02, was well recieced and found a place among heavy radio and TV play, also securing the band on the 2002 Warped Tour.
The Make Yourself At Home EP was released in November of ‘03 and was an unpluged EP; consisting of acustic sessions performed in Vasoli’s basement and the bands tour bus. A live DVD was also released with the EP featuring an acoustic set performed live at Skate & Surf 2003 in Asbury Park, NJ.
Soon after this, The Starting Line was signed to Geffen records.
Based On A True Story was released in May ‘05 and turned out much more succesful than their previous full length, topping at #18 on the Bilboard 200 chart. Tentions rose between the band and Geffen Records and many songs on True Story are directed at the label, who had asked them to write “more radio friendly, New Found Glory type songs”.
A few months later the band was relesed from Geffen, per their request, and later signed to Virgin Records; releasing their 3rd full length Direction in july ‘07.
On March 5th 2008, the band announced they were going on a break in order for the band members to pursue other musical ventures.
Vasoli, along with fellow band member Brian Schmutz, then formed Person L. Vasoli, taking up lead vocals and guitar, released the bands bebut Initial on August 5th 2008, on his own label Human Interest.
Vasoli has since announced that Person L’s new album will be released in Febuary ‘09.
Vasoli has contributed countless back-up vocals for numerous songs and bands and has proved a role model for beginning musicians. I have seen numerous times The Starting Line stated as an infulence for bands and Vasoli’s other works as well.
