Warped Tour
Warped Tour is a summer music festival that travels around the U.S. every summer. Usually from about mid June to early to mid August.
Founded in 1994 by Kevin Lyman, it has since exploded in popularity and size; Vans now sponsers the tour (as it is often referred to the Vans Warped Tour) and there have been up to 100 bands playing in one day.
The Tour usually takes place in fields or fair grounds with 10 different stages. Each band has a 30 minute set (yep, everybody) and the times are posted on a giant time board in the middle of the setup. There are usually many bands playing at once, with times ranging from 11 AM, to 8 or 9 PM.
Warped Tour is not just a place for music either. It is home to endless, (non prof) organizations, record labels, clothing lines, sponsers, and food tents; as well as half pipes for bikers and skaters. Each band also has a merch tent where they sell all their stuff and where the set times are posted as well.
The Warped Echo initiative (WEI) was started in 2006; and since then the three R’s have been a big part of the tour (reduce, reuse and recycle).
- The Kevinsays stage is completely solar powered and produces no carbon emissions whatsoever, (the Warped Echo Iniciative tent is also solar powered).
- The catering tents have switched to reusable plates and utensils, and all the take away boxes and cutlery are biodegradable.
- Since it started in 2006, the Warped Echo Initiative have cut their petroleum usage by 30% by using biodiesel.
- There are teams of people each day who go around and pick up trash; also recycling. A very cool thing about this is if you pick up a bag of trash or recycling and take it back to the Warped Echo tent, they give you free shirts donated by the bands!
Genres ranging from pop, screamo, christian, and punk rock, now fill the slots on the tour every year and attract every kind of music lover imaginable. Last year there were over 160 bands signed up for the tour, With 60-80 playing at each date! That’s alot of music if you ask me…
